We successfully represented former employee of the Bank of Jamaica, Mr. Karim Kiffin, before the Industrial Disputes Tribunal (IDT) in a claim against the Bank of Jamaica (BOJ) for unjustifiable dismissal.
Mr. Kiffin was terminated by the BOJ, without good reason and in breach of prevailing labour laws, after just six (6) months of a five (5) year contract. His resulting award of Fifty Million Two Hundred Thousand Jamaican Dollars (J$50,200,000) is considered (at the time of award) to be the largest single award granted by the IDT to an aggrieved employee.
The case is instructive for both employers and employees in respect of the rights and responsibilities of each party and how the law applies to such matters.
